Michael Sharkey won the prize for his MPhil thesis, titled: "Translation and Telling China's Story to the World: On the Chinese-English Translation of Xi Jinping's Speech at the Opening Ceremony of the First Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, 14th May 2017."
Michael will soon begin a PhD in Translation at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research will continue to focus on Chinese-English political translation, comparing Chinese-English translations of the works of Mao Zedong. His work will explore the distinction between outward (译出) and inward (译入) translation practices, investigating the impact of the cultural values, political goals, and ideological objectives of translating institutions on works of political translation.
