With the rapid growth of urbanization, more and more deserted villages have emerged and rural housing land is wasted in China. The inefficient use of rural housing land has led to the expansion of rural dwellings, which has caused the loss and deterioration of rural residential environment. In order to shape the transition of rural housing land and reallocate the unused rural housing land by market means, the Chinese government has proposed a series of policies to set up a registry of rural housing land since 2010. We conducted in-depth interviews with 265 rural households from rural areas in Wuhan, Hubei to explore the rural households’ understanding of such policies.
